Most medium‑scale factories, construction sites and processing plants need between 300‑600kW. At 500kW prime, one JT‑500KW covers the full demand without paralleling. For projects expanding from 300kW, this is the point where adding a second generator becomes unnecessary.
At 500kW, you can use a V12 engine (like the KTA19‑G3 derated) or an inline‑6 (NTA855‑GA). We use the inline‑6 because it has fewer cylinders, simpler maintenance, lower rebuild cost and better fuel efficiency at partial loads. For sites where 500kW is the final target (not an intermediate step to 800kW), inline‑6 is the more economical architecture.
The NTA855‑GA's 18.9L displacement means each cylinder displaces 3.15L — larger than the 2.5‑3.0L per cylinder typical of smaller engines asked to deliver 500kW. Larger displacement at this power level means lower brake‑specific fuel consumption because the engine does not need to be pushed to high BMEP to deliver rated power. Result: 202‑210 g/kW·h at full load vs 210‑218 g/kW·h for smaller‑displacement 500kW units (Cummins NTA855 series datasheet).
The 550L fuel tank provides approximately 7‑8 hours at 75% load — matching the standard 8‑hour construction shift in most markets. For construction sites where fuel delivery is weekly (not daily), this tank size means one refill per week for typical usage patterns. If your site runs 24‑hour operations, factor in a secondary bulk tank rather than expecting one generator tank to cover 24 hours.
Construction sites move every 1‑2 years. Mining sites stay for 10‑20 years. For construction, the 500‑hour maintenance interval (Cummins NTA855 series datasheet) means approximately one service every 2‑3 months for a site running 8 hours/day. This is infrequent enough to avoid disrupting project schedules, but frequent enough to catch issues before they become failures. For construction contractors who are not running 24‑hour operations, this interval matches your actual usage pattern.
